600 Point After Action Reports (AARs)

Players: Hugh Owens (British Airlanding) vs. John Miller (GR) (German Panzer.)
600 points in a Free for All (FFA)

The Table: Some woods and a road, mostly open.

The Plan: Race down the road and grab the unprotected objectives.

The Actual Battle: Turn one started out well for the Huns, taking out 1 of the pair of Brit AT guns before they could deploy.  The Brits got payback by killing a Panzer on their turn.  The tanks then deployed to pummel the infantry and remaining AT gun but while the gun lost all of its attached elements, it survived and proceeded to kill another panzer and bail a second.  The infantry finished the job and successfully assaulted the remainder of the panzers. The Germans lost the game with one of one platoons destroyed.

Lessons Learned: Stick with the plan!  I didn’t need to shoot it out or get in assault range but since I did Hugh was more than happy to oblige.

Players: Bill Jenkins' Scotts Rifles vs, Rich's experimental Army
600 point Free-for-All 28 JUN 08, 1330 Hrs

The Reality: My Scot's arrived ready for another battle at Rich's house.  As soon as we exchanged army lists I was informed that this is an "X" (experimental) Category army and classified Top Secret.   Therefore this is all I can say about it directly.

I planned on Eating Schnitzel for lunch, but ended up with some very sour KRAUTS.

I remembered to dig in the mortars straight away, so that made them less attractive to the daschund.  I even managed to do some damage to the infantry with them.  For the most part the dice were not in my favor firing bombardment.

Three platoons of Scots charged across the battlefield.  The 1st platoon started off by moving at the double up the slot on the left flank headed right for one of the objective markers.  They got away with it and did not take any fire.  Now they are only 1 move away from the objective and its defenders (This game will be over before it gets started).  1st platoons meet some minor resistance along the way and assault the objective defenders.  Bang! We get pinned and the dice got cold.

The 2nd and 3rd platoons make their way up the middle and right flank right into the "X". Bloody Hell, the 2nd platoon starts mixing it up; there is smoke from my 2 in mortar and shots from the PIAT, assaults and counter assaults.  Then the "X" breaks off and looks toward the 3rd platoon trying to flank it.  Right before the 3rd makes its move, my helmet is knocked clean off my head and someone yells SNIPER.  This Bloke is at our six.  He came out of thin air.  Minor causalities but a huge distraction.  Giving "X" the opportunity to inflict some major damage on the 3rd platoon. Thank The Queen for our Bag Piper who rallied the 2IC back from the dead not once but twice and managed to eliminate the sniper with an assault before his demise.

Since the 1st platoon is pinned the action moves back to the 2nd platoon.  These brave Lads did not hesitate getting right into the action with elements of the entire opposing force (did I mention that by now the entire apposing force is a few independents and the "X").  Anyway, they were hot using almost every British special rule available and were kicking the snot out of them until the dice were not.  Then it was the end of the line for these Gallant Warrior, the entire platoon was eliminated.  Our last hope is the Fighting 1st platoon.

Finally the 1st were unpinned, went to ground and waited (a short wait) for the impending assault.  On it came, assault by the "X", counter assault by the 1st.   Then there were several rounds of counter-counter assaults by both sides.  As the "X" was keeping us tied up we were slowly being eliminated by enemy MG fire from dug in positions.  PIAT and mortar were ineffective (this skirmish was bloodier than any Disposable Heroes game I have ever played).  Quick, check the clock, if we could hold out a little longer we could run the clock out and have a draw.   There was still hope and a strong spirit when it happened.  Several well placed shots and the Fighting 1st was gone (this was due to the bad dice I was using). The "X" forces were victorious.

All in all a very exciting game.

Lessons learned: Buy the black German dice.  You know the ones that always come up with what you need!   Well, perhaps a little more experience on my part may help also.

Players: Allen Kaplan's PanzerGrenadierKonpanie vs. Bill Jenkins' Scotts Rifles, Friday, 27 JUN 08, 1830hrs
600 point Free-for-All

The Reality: The battle begins between Alan's Germans and Bill J's Scotts.  It was a good game with a lot of moving, shooting and assaulting.  Unfortunately The Germans won when tanks took and held an objective.   The Scott's had an objective but one move too late.  If I had dug in, the results may have been different.  All in all, a very enjoyable game (even though I lost to those Germans that basically can do what ever they want, have rates of fire of 1,000 even when they move.  Did I mention the dog ate my homework?)

Lessons learned: Dig In, Dig IN, DIG IN!

signed Bill Jenkins

Players: The Red One Assault Company (Rich & Karen) vs. John Miller's Panzer Kompanie
600 points Free-for-All

Terrain: Fairly cluttered with lots of small hills, some woods and one big steep hill in the corner. Ideal for infantry

The Plan: Attack in force using the terrain as cover (sound familiar?).

The Reality: I started by winning the die roll and picking the wrong end of the battlefield. I want to set up my objectives on the tall steep hill forcing him to bog (hopefully). Instead I set up on the hill and he came nowhere near it. The Panzer IV Hs could only be taken out by my bazooks!  So I figured that all my baxookas and flame throwers would do the trick. So I move the infantry in close and the bazookas MISSED and MISSED again! The first to go... my bazookas and Flame throwers. With no teeth I tried the assault anyway....... Hence you are readin this report since I lost...... and if this sounds a lot like the last report, SORRY!!!!

Lessons Learned: Bring more bazookas and more terrain for my troops to hid in.

Players: The Red One Assault Company (Rich & Karen) vs. Lee's 21st Panzer Division Stug Battery supported by a Tiger
600 points Free-for-All

Terrain: Fairly cluttered with bocage, some woods and a few hills. Ideal for infantry

The Plan: Attack in force using the terrain as cover.

The Reality: The Stug Battery assault guns have an armor rating of 2/2/0 maiking small arms fire use less. So I figured that all my baxookas and flame throwers would do the trick. So I move the infantry in close and the bazookas MISSED and MISSED again! The acuracy of the assault guns was uncanny! The first to go... my bazookas and Flame throwers. With no teeth I tried the assault anyway....... Hence you are readin this report since I lost......

Lessons Learned: Bring more bazookas!

Players: John Miller (GR) (German Panzer.) Defender vs. John Sorge (German 12th SS Panzer) Attacker played 6/18/08 @ Gamers Realm.
Mission: FFA 600 points

Terrain: The terrain on the board was fairly open. To the top left and bottom right each had a wide low hill about 10" diameter. The top right was a tall hill of entirely difficult terrain. Finally the bottom left has a very long 2 level wooded hill. A road split the center top to bottom.

The Forces: Everybody had Panzer MkIV's. There were 11 of 13 things on the board. This game should have been called; "Got any 4's… Go Fish" or "Shootout at the Mk4 Corral" or better yet, after all the shooting…"Hun Smoke".

The Plan: John selected the open side of the board. So I deployed in the wooded hill. He deployed behind the 2 hills. My plan was to shoot it out. Having the woods meant I hit him on 5's where he needed 6's for me.

The Reality: My plan worked fairly well. I was able to win the long range duel. I kept his CiC and 2IC pined…even killing the 2 and bailing the CiC a few times. I was also able to kill 2 of his remaining 4 Mk4's as they he used the hills to mask his approached the objectives and 1 on the objective. He only manages to kill 2 of my Mk4, but did get my AA and recovery vehicle.

With the objectives on my end both contested, I took a HUGE gamble. I moved 3 of my remaining 4 tanks to finish off his last Mk4. I do this he can't take any objectives (only his CiC would be left) and I get at least a tie and probably a win. So what happens…. All 3 of my tanks miss every single shot and I blow the roll for storm trooper back to the objective. John wins 5-1.

Losses; SS German: 2 Pz Mk4's, an AA and Recovery vehicle. 1 Platoon in total. German: 4 Mk4's and 0 platoons.

Lessons Learned: I don't care what people say about charging with your tanks, I like firepower duels where I have the better firepower. It came very close to working where his platoon had to check twice for moral. Also if I had killed his CiC instead of bailing him 3 times he couldn't have made those motivation checks.

On the flip side, John's fire and maneuver also worked. He got up there and forced me to make a critical decision. I went for the killing blow and lost. This game showed the most important and most often overlooked thing about F&M. It forces the other players' hand. John didn't play my game and eventually made me play his. This showed an excellent offense can crack a superb defense. My complements to him on breaking what I thought was a winning strategy.

Players: The Red One Assault Company (Rich & Karen) vs. 12th SS Division - Panzer Company  (Sorge)
600 points in a Free for All (FFA)

The Table: Just a bit of woods and some small hills. Pretty open..

The Plan: Dig in and wait for him to close.

The Actual Battle: We dug in at the objectives. But he stayed at range and fired and fired and fired some more. Getting bored I charged piecemeal and got slaughtered.

Lessons Learned: Assault with everything!!!!!

Players: The Red One Assault Company (Rich & Karen) vs. British 7th Armour Division Armored Squadron  (Norm)
600 points in a Free for All (FFA)

The Table: Some Woods and building and even some flooded areas.

The Plan: As he did not have a lot of units defend the objectives with 2 platoons and attack through the woods with the third

The Actual Battle: We dug in at the objectives. Even made a great assault on his tanks but to no avail! Machine guns and fire power proved to carry the day.

Lessons Learned: Need to get more than one platoon in on the assault!

Players: The Red One Assault Company (Rich & Karen) vs. British Infantry  (Bill Jenkins)
600 points in a Free for All (FFA)

The Table: Some Woods off the beach but fairly open.

The Plan: As Karen favorite command is CHARGE! that's what we did.

The Actual Battle: In the open one stand  fell then another and another and yet another. Looked Like Bloody Omaha all over again.

Lessons Learned: Attacking anyone over open terrain is BAD!
